MACON, GA – Jose de Sario, Brian Slivonik, and Derek Bell each won their singles matches on the opening day of the 2nd Annual Mercer Bear Gridiron Classic here at Mercer University. The doubles team of Miguel Alvarez-Hevia and Laurent Mailloux also won their opening day match as did the duo of Bell and Blaine Miller.
In Flight A of the singles, Fabian Lundberg was defeated by Troy's Vaclac Slezak, 6-0, 6-4 while Alvarez-Hevia dropped his match, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 to Francisco Yim Yim, also from Troy.
In Flight B, de Sario, who got a first round bye, easily defeated Berry's Ryan Milner, 6-1, 6-3, but Mailloux fell, 6-1, 6-4, to Mercer's Nicolas Guillon in the first series of matches.
In Flight C, Slivonik also had a first round bye and then beat Alvaro Conesa of Middle Georgia Norfolk State, 6-3, 6-3 while Oscar Söderlund fell, 6-2, 6-3, to Nico de Grof of Georgia Southern.
In Flight D, Bell, who had a bye in the first round, went on to defeat Dent Law of Coastal Georgia, 6-2, 6-1, but Blaine Miller fell, 6-3, 6-2 to Brad Dunn of Coastal Georgia.
In Flight A of the doubles, the team of Alvarez-Hevia and Mailloux defeated Yim Yim and Daniel Bustamante of Troy, 6,4. In another part of the Flight, de Sario and Fabian Lundberg dropped their match to Mercer's Sam Philp and Anderson Scarpa, 6,3.
In Flight B, Miller and Bell defeated Troy's McKinley and Racine, 6,3, while Slivonik and Söderlund lost, 6,4, to Lluch and Singh of NSU.
The tournament continues through Sunday.
