  • Top-20 Soccer Moments at Barnett Field, #1 (November 5, 1971)
    November 07, 2018
The task of paring a list of 500 games down to 20 was at times daunting, and there were some challenges involving soccer that were not present for softball. Some of the games we’ve presented over the last several weeks were easy to choose, and the only question was where they would fall on the list, but there was never any doubt as to which game would occupy the top spot. Much like the number one game on softball’s top-20 countdown, it was an easy selection, as it represents two things that occurred at Barnett Field in the same game that have each happened only once on their home field. With their 1-0 overtime win over Rollins on November 5, 1971, the Moccasins not only clinched a conference championship in the most dramatic way possible, they also secured a bid to what has so far been their only trip to the NCAA Tournament.
  • Top-20 Soccer Moments at Barnett Field, #2 (September 15, 2006)
    November 02, 2018
Sometimes the most memorable moments aren’t associated with a single game, or even a single play in a game, but the entire atmosphere surrounding those things. The game is still a big part of it, but there’s a lot more to the moment than what happens on the field. That was the case with No. 2 on our countdown, which occurred on September 15, 2006. It was a night that saw the Moccasins defeat Tampa 2-1, while celebrating the 50-year anniversary of men’s soccer at Florida Southern College.
  • Three Moccasins Voted to All-SSC Men’s Soccer Team
    October 31, 2018
MELBOURNE, FL – Florida Southern has landed three players on the 2018 All-Sunshine State Conference Men’s Soccer Team, led by repeat selection Christoph Gums who is a first team midfielder. Earning second team honors are defender Foster Appiah and forward James Meehan. The three all-conference selections are the most for Florida Southern in 12 years.
  • Top-20 Soccer Moments at Barnett Field, #3 (September 12, 1987)
    October 30, 2018
As already noted earlier in the countdown, soccer is a sport dominated by defense, so goals are normally at a premium. If every goal scored were comparable to a touchdown, then scoring 10 goals would be more akin to a 70-point explosion in American football. In today’s version of college football, 70 points are more common than it was a decade ago, but 100 points? That hasn’t been seen at the major college level in 50 years. The Moccasins have done the soccer equivalent of that much more recently, however, and it occurred on September 12, 1987, in a 16-0 win over Florida Bible College.
  • Breakthrough Season for Men’s Soccer Ends in SSC Tournament Quarterfinals as Lynn Scores Late for 3-1 Win
    October 29, 2018
BOCA RATON, FLA. – An unbelievable shot by Ilias Papadopoulos with 7:02 remaining snapped a 1-1 tie before Jack Watson scored his second goal of the match in the waning seconds to give Lynn a 3-1 victory over Florida Southern in the quarterfinals of the Sunshine State Conference Tournament.
  • SSC Men's Soccer Tournament Begins Monday with Moccasins Heading to Lynn for Quarterfinals
    October 28, 2018
For the second year in a row, the Florida Southern men’s soccer team will be in Boca Raton to start the Sunshine State Conference Tournament with a quarterfinal match at Lynn University. Kickoff for Monday night’s match is 6 p.m. The Moccasins are again the No. 6 seed, and the Knights are again the No. 3 seed. The winner advances to the semifinal round to face No. 2 seed Barry on Thursday in Miami Shores at 4:30 p.m. The SSC has adopted a slightly different format this year with the higher seed hosting every game.
  • Top-20 Soccer Moments at Barnett Field, #4 (October 21, 2008)
    October 26, 2018
In 2007, under second-year head coach Ben Strawbridge, the Florida Southern women’s soccer team had a breakthrough season that saw them go 12-7-1, doubling their win total from the previous year while reaching double-digit wins for the first time in team history. In a cruel ending, though, the Moccasins were denied their first trip to the NCAA Tournament when, despite being ranked high enough to receive an at-large bid, they were bumped by an automatic qualifier from the Gulf South Conference that was ranked below them. The following year, however, the Moccasins did get that trip to NCAA postseason play, and they all but secured it on October 21, 2008, with a 1-0 win over Tampa.
  • Top-20 Soccer Moments at Barnett Field, #5 (October 27, 2011)
    October 23, 2018
In 2010, the Florida Southern men’s soccer team was in the running for a bid to the NCAA Tournament all the way until the final week of the season before a loss at Florida Tech in the final game of the season ended those hopes. Nevertheless, the Moccasins had put together a potent offense that returned largely intact in 2011, and finished eighth in the nation that year by averaging more than 2½ goals per game for the second year in a row. Hopes for the postseason were again high, but the mid-season schedule was unkind as losses to Palm Beach Atlantic, Lynn, and Rollins in the span of nine days (three teams that combined for 36 wins) offset a 4-1 start. The Mocs did rebound, however, with another strong run to end the season, culminating with a 4-1 win over 5th-ranked Rollins College, the highest ranked team the Mocs have ever beaten on their home field.

LAKELAND, FLA. – Playing their sixth nationally ranked opponent this year, Florida Southern wrapped up the regular season Tuesday night with a 3-0 loss to No. 13 Barry, which will send the Moccasins (12-4, 6-4 Sunshine State Conference) into the SSC Tournament as the number six seed with a quarterfinal match at Lynn on Monday, October 29.

    October 20, 2018

  • Top-20 Soccer Moments at Barnett Field, #6 (October 25, 1997)
    October 19, 2018
The recent and continuing success of the 2018 men’s soccer team has drawn a lot of comparisons to past Moccasin teams, including one in particular. In 1997, the Moccasins were in their fifth season under former Florida Southern goalkeeper Kris Pahl, who by the end of his career would be involved in more games as a player, assistant coach or head coach than anyone else in the history of Florida Southern soccer, 357 to be exact. The Moccasins had been hovering right around the .500 mark for a few seasons prior to 1997, but it was that year in which they took the next step forward and began the greatest five-year run the program has ever had. From 1997-2001, the Mocs won 12 or more games four times, had three seasons allowing less than one goal per match, and became fixtures in the South Region rankings with many of those weeks in the national rankings as well. It was on October 25, 1997, that Florida Southern broke a mark that had stood for 25 years, setting a new school record for wins with a resounding 8-0 victory over Carson-Newman.
  • Florida Southern Sits at No. 5 in First NCAA South Region Men's Soccer Ranking
    October 17, 2018
INDIANAPOLIS – The NCAA has released its first regional rankings of the 2018 season, and the Florida Southern men’s soccer team is No. 5 in the South. The rankings are used in the selection process for the NCAA Tournament in November, with four teams allocated to the South Region. The champions of the Sunshine State Conference and Gulf South Conference, as determined by their respective conference tournaments, each receive automatic bids, with the remaining two spots filled by at-large teams determined by regional ranking.
  • Moccasin Men’s Soccer Team Unleashes Scoring Barrage in 7-1 Win over Eckerd
    October 17, 2018
LAKELAND, FL – After conceding a goal in the 28th minute that gave Eckerd a 1-0 lead, Florida Southern needed only 32 seconds to tie the score, less than four minutes to take the lead itself, and not even the remainder of the first half to turn the game into a rout. The scoring continued well into the second half too as seven different Moccasins scored goals in a record-tying 7-1 win over the Tritons.
  • Top-20 Soccer Moments at Barnett Field, #7 (October 30, 2012)
    October 16, 2018
Ties are a way of life in soccer, though they often drive American sports fans out of their mind. It’s not that they don’t happen in other sports, but they’re so rare as to be noteworthy. Donovan McNabb once famously admitted he didn’t know NFL games could end in a tie, and the Florida Southern baseball team even played to a scoreless draw in 2018 at Mount Olive. In soccer, they happen frequently, and if a college postseason game ends in a draw, a series of five penalty kicks are used to determine which team advances to the next round, even though the official results still list it as a tie. By 2012, the Florida Southern women’s soccer team had been through that scenario four times in the previous four seasons, and come out on the wrong end in all four. On October 30, 2012, the Moccasins ended that hex, however, by “beating” Lynn in penalty kicks in the quarterfinals of the Sunshine State Conference Tournament.
  • Lehland Awarded SSC Defensive Player of the Week
    October 15, 2018
MELBOURNE, Fla. - Coming off two shutout wins last week, Florida Southern’s Claus Lehland is the Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player of the Week, bringing to four the total number of award winners this season from the Florida Southern men’s soccer team. The junior defender from Bergen, Norway played a vital role in the Moccasins’ 1-0 non-conference win over Mary (N.D.) to start the week before they finished it with a 4-0 win at Embry-Riddle in SSC play.
  • Four Different Mocs Score, Lehland Assists Two as Florida Southern Downs Embry-Riddle 4-0 in Men’s Soccer
    October 13, 2018
DAYTONA BEACH, FL – After scoreless first half with almost no scoring chances for either team, Florida Southern erupted for four goals in the second half, with junior defender Claus Lehland assisting two of them, as the Moccasins downed Embry-Riddle 4-0 Saturday night. The win moves Florida Southern’s overall record to 11-2, and its Sunshine State Conference record to 5-2. It also puts Florida Southern on the verge of clinching a spot in the SSC Tournament pending other results Saturday night.
  • Top-20 Soccer Moments at Barnett Field, #8 (October 10, 2015)
    October 11, 2018
Despite some close calls through the years, Lynn University managed to keep its perfect record against Florida Southern intact all the way into the current decade. The Knights won the first 16 meetings between the two schools, and there were some painful losses for the Moccasins along the way. The Mocs finally broke that streak in 2010 with a 2-1 victory over the 15th-ranked Knights in Boca Raton, but a home win was more elusive. That took until October 10, 2015, when the defending national champion Knights came to Lakeland as title contenders again but left with a 1-0 loss to the Moccasins.
  • Top-20 Soccer Moments at Barnett Field, #9 (September 28, 1999)
    October 09, 2018
The 1999 Florida Southern Moccasins were among the best men’s soccer teams the school has ever had, and their 13 wins remain the school record. That season fell right in the middle of a five-year run that saw them win 57 games under former Florida Southern goalkeeper Kris Pahl, who established the Moccasins as a power in the South Region and had them in contention for NCAA postseason play for the first time in many years. There were many memorable games during those five years, both at home and away, but one that stands out occurred on September 28, 1999, in a battle of nationally ranked teams involving Florida Southern and Lynn.
  • Bautista’s Goal Gives Florida Southern 1-0 Win Over Mary as Mocs Reach 10-Win Plateau for the Season
    October 08, 2018
LAKELAND, FL – Luis Bautista’s first goal of the season, early in the second half Monday night, lifted No. 8 Florida Southern to a 1-0 win over the University of Mary (ND) and gave the Moccasins a perfect record in their six non-conference games this season. It also gave Florida Southern its 10th win of the season against just two defeats, the Mocs’ first season in double digits since 2001.
  • Nova Southeastern Wins Battle of Top-20 Teams at Moccasin Field, Dealing Florida Southern 4-0 Defeat
    October 06, 2018
LAKELAND, FL – For the second time in the span of four days, Moccasin Field was the site of a matchup of nationally-ranked Division II men’s soccer teams, but No. 8 Florida Southern was on the wrong end of a 4-0 decision to No. 18 Nova Southeastern on Saturday night. The Sharks (9-2, 5-1 Sunshine State Conference) scored two goals in each half, and in each instance, less than a minute apart, dropping the Moccasins to 9-2 overall and 4-2 in the SSC.
  • Top-20 Soccer Moments at Barnett Field, #10 (October 23, 2010)
    October 05, 2018
Previously, the No. 11 game on the top-20 countdown highlighted the first time Florida Southern ever scored 10 goals in a game, but it was far from the last, nor was it the last time the Moccasins would have two players with a hat trick in the same game. Seven times, Florida Southern has hit double digits in the goal column and in four of those games, two different Moccasins have scored at least three goals. The most recent occurrence begins the second half of the countdown at No. 10, and it took place on October 23, 2010, in a 10-0 win over Ave Maria.
