Florida Southern College Director of Athletics Pete Meyer has announced the hiring of Lee White as the Moccasins’ new head men’s golf coach. White, who has spent eight years with the program as a student-athlete and assistant coach, is being elevated to the position of head coach following the retirement of Doug Gordin.
Good Run by Coultas Ends One Shot Short of U.S. Open; Graduating Senior Still Shoots Two-Under-Par at Sectional Qualifying
JUPITER, FL – Recent graduate John Coultas put together a good run at qualifying for the U.S. Open on Monday during the sectional qualifying tournament at The Bear’s Club in Jupiter, Florida, but the four-time First Team All-American fell just one stroke short of reaching next week’s PGA TOUR Event. Advancing to the sectional as an amateur, Coultas was still one of only nine golfers in the two-round tournament to break par at two-under with rounds of 68 and 74.
COLUMBUS, OH – Graduating men's golfer John VanDerLaan won the 2018 Barbasol Shootout Saturday afternoon at Scioto Country Club, earning him an exemption into the PGA TOUR's Barbasol Championship later this summer. VanDerLaan became the first Division II golfer to ever win the title by shooting a three-under-par 67 to finish three shots ahead of the University of Oregon's Norman Xiong and Midland College's Callum Bruce.
The books are about to close on another year for the Florida Southern Moccasins, but for one of their long-time coaches, they won't re-open again in August as they have for the last 40 years. When head men's golf coach Doug Gordin announced last summer that the 2017-18 season would be his last, he knew the final chapter would be this May and it was only a question of what would be written on the last page.
NORMAN, OK – Florida Southern senior John VanDerLaan has been named the 2018 Division II Jack Nicklaus Award winner, given annually to the national player-of-the-year in men’s golf. The four-time All-American recently completed his final season with the Moccasins by helping them reach the semifinals of the NCAA Division II National Championships. He is the second Moccasin to win this award, joining teammate John Coultas, who was the 2016 recipient.

Incredible Run for Florida Southern and Head Coach Doug Gordin Ends in National Semifinals vs. West Florida
MUSCLE SHOALS, AL – A head-to-head battle between the nation’s No. 1 and No. 2 ranked Division II men’s golf teams may have been a little bit better as a national championship match, but that’s not how the bracket worked out, and the national semifinals were the next best thing. That battle on Thursday afternoon at The Fighting Joe at Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail ended up being won by top-ranked West Florida, which came from behind over the final six holes to post a 3½-1½ decision over Florida Southern to advance to Friday's national championship match against 4th-ranked Lynn.
Top-Seeded Moccasins Move on to National Semifinals with 4-0-1 Win over Lincoln Memorial; West Florida up Next
MUSCLE SHOALS, AL – Patience is a word Doug Gordin has used a lot this week, and Thursday’s national quarterfinal match against Lincoln Memorial was the perfect example of what he has been talking about. After some early stumbles, the top-seeded Moccasins took back, piece by piece, almost everything the eighth-seeded Railsplitters had earned. The final result was a 4-0-1 victory that sends Florida Southern into the semifinals Thursday afternoon against No. 4 seed West Florida.
John VanDerLaan Wins Individual National Title as Florida Southern Men's Golf Team Heads to Medal Play as Top Seed at NCAA Championships
MUSCLE SHOALS, AL – Senior John VanDerLaan put his name in the history books multiple times Wednesday at the 2018 NCAA Division II National Men’s Golf Championships, and in the process, helped propel Florida Southern into the medal play portion of the tournament as the top seed among the eight remaining teams. VanDerLaan’s final-round 65 gave him the individual national title, and the Moccasins had a team postseason record 276 to earn the top seed in the medal play beginning Thursday.
The postseason awards continue to roll in for the Florida Southern men’s golf team as seniors John VanDerLaan and John Coultas were each named PING First Team All-Americans by the GCAA (Golf Coaches Association of America), and Jacob Penny was selected as a member of the All-Freshman Team. It’s the fourth year in a row VanDerLaan and Coultas have been All-Americans, and each were part of the same All-Freshman Team of which Penny is now a member.
