Florida Southern College has released its 2018 baseball schedule and the Moccasins will play 26 of their 49 games at historic Henley Field. Twenty-three games will be on the road, including six games out of state. The Moccasins, who advanced to the NCAA South Regional Tournament last season and finished with a 35-17 record, will face five other teams that made the 2017 NCAA Tournament, including North Georgia, Kentucky Wesleyan, and Mount Olive, as well as fellow Sunshine State Conference members, Nova Southeastern and Tampa.
The Moccasins will play a 30-game Sunshine State Conference schedule this season–the most ever–as Embry-Riddle and Palm Beach Atlantic will be competing be competing as full members of the SSC this season and will be eligible for the regular season title.
The Moccasins will open the 2018 campaign with a three-game home series against West Florida on Feb. 2-3. Florida Southern swept three games from the visiting Argonauts last season and have won four in a row and five of the last six against the Gulf South Conference school.
A non-conference game at Eckerd follows on Feb. 6 after which the Moccasins will continue on the road with three games at North Georgia on Feb. 9-11. This will be Florida Southern's first-ever meeting with the Nighthawks, which won the NCAA Southeast Regional Championship last season. North Georgia finished the year with a 46-12 record that included a Peach Belt Conference title.
Returning home, Florida Southern will take on Lee for three games on Feb. 16-17, meeting the Flames, members of the Gulf South Conference, for the first-time.
The Moccasins' annual Spring Training exhibition clash with the Detriot Tigers takes place on Feb. 22 at Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland.
Florida Southern will open Sunshine State Conference action with three games at Barry in Miami Shores on Feb. 23-24. The Moccasins swept the series in 2017 and have won five in a row and 14 of the last 16 meetings in the Buccaneer series.
Back to non-conference play, the Moccasins play host to Kentucky Wesleyan for three games on Feb. 27-Mar. 2. The two foes last met in 1990, a game won by Florida Southern. The Panthers won the Great Midwest Athletic Conference championship and played in the NCAA Midwest Regional. The four-game homestand concludes with a Mar. 3 single game with Cedarville, a first-time meeting with the Yellow Jackets, also members of the G-MAC.
Up next are four road games, beginning with two contests at Mount Olive in North Carolina on Mar. 5-6. The Trojans (48-10 in 2017 and NCAA Southeast Regional participants) took two of the three meetings with the Moccasins in Lakeland last season while FSC swept a three-game set at UMO in 2016.
The Moccasins stay in the Carolinas for their next game in Tigerville, SC on Mar. 7 at North Greenville another first-time opponent for Florida Southern. The Crusaders were 38-15 a season ago. FSC travels north once again on Mar. 13, but will stay in the state, playing at Flagler on Mar. 13. The Mocs and the Saints have split their two-game series in each of the last two seasons. The Saints posted a 31-24 record in 2017.
It's back to the friendly confines of Henley Field for a three-game SSC series against Eckerd on Mar. 16-17. Florida Southern swept the four-game season series last season, taking three wins in St. Petersburg and one victory at Henley Field. The Moccasin baseball program will be holding an all-baseball alumni reunion this weekend and will have a special pregame recognition for all former Moccasins prior to the Friday night contest.
Flagler makes a return match-up with Florida Southern with a game at Henley Field on Mar. 20.
It's all SSC play the rest of the season, starting off with three games at home against Lynn (30-20 overall in 2017) on Mar. 23-24. FSC will be looking to snap an eight-game win streak by the Knights in this season. Florida Southern's 1988 NCAA National Championship baseball team will be holding their 30th-anniversary reunion during the weekend.
It's off across the state to Daytona Beach for the Moccasins on Mar. 30-31 for a three-game series at Embry-Riddle. FSC swept Embry-Riddle in three games in 2017.
Rollins plays host to Florida Southern for three games on Mar. 6-7 in Winter Park. The Moccasins won two of three from the Tars in 2017. Rollins is the Moccasins' oldest rival as the two clubs have met 221 times since 1957. FSC returns to Lakeland on Mar. 13-14 to face Florida Tech and the Moccasins will look to extend their four-game win streak versus the Panthers.
It's back on the road once again on Mar. 20-21 as the Moccasins travel to West Palm Beach for three games at Palm Beach Atlantic where the Moccasins will look to continue their winning ways against the Sailfish as FSC has taken the last six meetings.
Florida Southern will then be home for the next two SSC series, hosting Nova Southeastern on Mar. 27-28. The Knights, who were 35-18 last year with a 16-8 SSC mark, swept the season series in 2017. The Moccasins final home series will be against Saint Leo on May 3-4. The Lions won two of three games in 2017.
The regular season will conclude with three games at Tampa on May 11-12. FSC won the first meeting last season at home, but UT came back to take the next two. The Spartans are the defending SSC champions, winning the title with a 20-4 record while finishing 39-14 overall.
