Lynn Goes Long Ball to Sweep Mocs in Twinbill

LAKELAND - Lynn hit five home runs and collected 23 hits to sweep 9th-ranked Florida Southern 11-3 and 8-5 in Sunshine State Conference action here Saturday at Henley Field. With the two wins, Lynn improves to 8-6 overall and 3-0 in the SSC while the Moccasins fall to 8-6 and 0-3.

After Kyle Schindler gave Lynn a 1-0 lead with a solo homer in the top of the third inning of game one off Moccasin starter Logan Browning, Florida Southern took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the frame on a infield ground out by Browning and a two-run homer by Sam Machonis.

The lead was short-lived as Frank Grandinette and Eric Schindler added solo homers for the Knights in the fourth tie the game at 3-all. Florida Southern took back the lead in the fifth when Pablo Cabrera singled with one out and Browning drew a walk. Machonis then singled to right field to score Cabrera. After a double steal, Browning scored on a wild pitch with Machonis moving to third on the play. Mitch Reeves then hit a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Machonis and give FSC a 6-3 lead.

Lynn opened the sixth with back-to-back singles by Grandinette and Miguel Ceballos off FSC reliever Mitch McCathy while Eric Schidnler reached an a fielding error to load the bases. John Borup drew a walk for one run while Kyle Schindler plated another run with a sac fly. The final Lynn run scoreedd on a wild pitch by Brady Arenson (1-1) as the Knights were ahead 7-6.

Florida Southern took the lead back with a two out rally in the seventh with Reeves and Jason Sierra collecting back-to-back singles for one run while a Dominic Brugnoni double scored Sierra to give the lead back to the Moccasins 8-7.

Lynn scored four more runs in the eighth on three hits, a walk and a hit batters to go back ahead, 11-8. Florida Southern's final run came on a solo homer by Sierra in the bottom of the ninth.

In game two, Lynn jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a RBI-double by John Silviano and a run-scoring single by Ryan Donovan off Moccasin starter Cameron Hanes (1-3). Silviano would hit his second homer of the series in the third for a a 3-0 Knights' lead.

Florida Southern rallied for four runs in the bottom of the third as Browning clubbed his third homer of the season with Cabrera aboard for two runs. Machonis doubled and scored on a single by Reeves aided by a throwing error by the Knight's shortstop. Reeves would come around to score on a single by Sierra.

Lynn again answered by batting around in the fifth for four runs, two coming via a homer by Ryan Donovan and a Moccasin error with two outs that resulted in two runs. Florida plated one run in the bottom of the fifth on singles by Machonis and Reeves and an infield round out by Brugnoni.

Tyler Knowles worked the final 4.1 innings for Florida Southern, holding the Knights to one unearned on one hit with seven strikeouts.

Florida Southern plays its annual Spring Training clash with the Detroit Tigers on Monday, Feb. 29 at 1:05 pm at Joker Marchant Stadium before returning to regular season action Thursday at Henley Field at 6 pm against Notre Dame of Ohio.
