Augusta Scores Four in the First; Shuts Out Mocs, 6-0

AUGUSTA, GA - In Saturday's 7-2 win at Augusta, Florida Southern scored five runs over the first two innings. On Sunday, it was Augusta scoring early with a four-run first inning as the Jaguars shut out the Moccasins 6-0 here at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

A trio of Augusta pitchers combined on the five-hit shutout with Will Thompson striking out six and limiting Florida Southern to four hits in 7.0 innings of work to get the win. Casey Lenoch and Frank Warren each worked a scoreless frame for the Jaguars.

Augusta (1-1) batted around in the bottom of the first inning off Moccasin starter Cameron Hanes (0-1). With out out in the inning, Hunter Boose and Drew Taylor hit back-to-back doubles for one run while Connor Gilbert followed with a homer to left field. One out later, Jim Wagner hit Augusta's third double of the inning and scored on a single by Brent Aflord for the 4-0 lead.

Thompson gave up a single to the Mocs' Mitch Reeves with two outs in the first inning and then retired eight of the next nine batters, allowing just a lead-off walk by Shawn Sanders in the top of the third. Jason Sierra broke the string with one-out single in the fourth and moved to second on a balk, but was left stranded.

Sanders got on base once again with a one-out single in the fifth for the Moccasins and, one out later, stole second base, but Florida Southern could not capitalize. The Moccasins went down in order in the sixth and Thompson struck out two in the seventh before Blake Swann tripled to right center. Thompson recovered by getting the next batter to ground out to end the threat.

Augusta left at least one runner on base in each of the third through seventh innings, stranding a total of seven runners, before Taylor hit his second double of the day in the eighth to plate two more Jaguar runs.

Sierra led off the ninth with his second hit of the day for Florida Southern, but Warren set down the next three Moccasin batters in order to preserve the win.

Hanes worked 6.0 innings for the Moccasins, allowing four runs on eight hits with a pair of strikeouts. Craig Savage tossed the final two innings for Florida Southern, giving up a pair of scores on five hits.

The top four batters in the Augusta line-up combined for nine base hits and five runs batted in.

Florida Southern will have its home season opener on Saturday, Feb. 6 in hosting the University of West Florida in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Henley Field. It will be the season opener for the Argonauts, who posted a 30-18 record last season. The same two teams will play a single game on Sunday, also a 1 p.m.
