Kathy Benn spent 48 years at Florida Southern as a faculty member in the school’s Physical Education Department before retiring at the end of the 2013-14 school year. Benn joined the faculty at Florida Southern in 1966 as an associate professor and began her coaching career with the Moccasins in 1971. Benn, in collaboration Florida Southern Hall of Fame baseball coach and athletic director Hal Smeltzly, was instrumental in the organizing of Florida Southern’s women’s athletic program. Benn was FSC’s first-ever coach in women’s basketball, volleyball and tennis club teams and was responsible for recruiting the school’s first-ever female scholarship athlete. Along with recruiting the first women’s scholarship athlete, Benn also started women’s tennis as the school’s first women’s varsity intercollegiate sport. Those teams Benn coached laid the foundation for what is now one of the most prominent and successful women’s athletics programs in the nation. Her husband, Norm Benn, was inducted into the FSC Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004 as he served the school’s women’s basketball coach from 1985-97, along with assisting with the women’s golf program and serving as the school’s NCAA Compliance officer.
