Mocs Sweep Christian Brothers, Extend Win Streak to Five Straight
PENSACOLA - Florida Southern continued its strong play here Saturday morning as they hit a season-high .440 en route to posting a three-set victory over Christian Brothers (25-18, 25-18, 25-10) in third match of the South Regional Crossover held at the UWF Field House on the University of West Florida campus.
With the victory, the Moccasins improve to 16-5 overall and extended its win streak to five consecutive matches, while CBU fell to 8-13 overall on the season.
The Mocs will look to complete play at the South Regional Crossover undefeated as they face 19th-ranked West Florida at 3 p.m. today in its final match of the event.
In the win over CBU, the Moccasins had a balanced offensive attack as five players recorded five or more kills and five players hit .400 or better as the Mocs finished the match with a .440 hitting percentage as a team. It was the first time this season that FSC had hit over .400 in a match and the first time since hitting .407 in a three-set win over Assumption last season on Sept. 12, 2012.
Against the Bucs, senior middle blocker Dominique Hale (Kingman, Ariz.) led the Mocs balanced offensive attack as he had nine kills and hit .636, while sophomore middle blocker Kayshia Brady (Welaka, Fla.) had eight kills and hit .667 and junior outside hitter Kate Stromberg (Lexington, Ky.) also had eight kills and hit .400 in the win.
Freshman outside hitter Brindl Langley (Camas, Fla.) had seven kills and hit .500, junior right side hitter Gabby Fernandez (Tampa, Fla.) added seven kills and sophomore setter Kendall Marotti (LaBelle, Fla.) had four kills, 34 assists and hit a team-best .750.
While its offense was strong, the Mocs defense also played well as they recorded seven blocks and had 43 digs and held CBU to a .189 hitting percentage. Langley led the defensive charge with 12 digs, while Stromberg had 10 digs and Marotti added eight digs. Brady and Hale each recorded three blocks in the match.
The Mocs also got a strong effort in serving as they recorded seven aces and had just five service errors in the match. For the match, six different Mocs recorded an ace, including Stromberg having two aces. CBU finished with just one ace and had five service errors.
Alexis Gillis led CBU's attack with 11 kills, while Hannah Kurtz had five kills and hit .286 and Sami Guse posted 10 digs in the loss.
