Soccer, Volleyball Teams Report For Preseason Practice

With the start of the fall sports campaign a little less than three weeks away, Florida Southern Athletics welcomed its men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball teams back to campus this past weekend to begin preparations for the 2012 season. All three teams reported to campus on Saturday for meetings and physicals before beginning preseason practice on Monday morning.

The women’s soccer team began practice at 7:30 a.m., with the men’s soccer team beginning its first practice of the season at 9:30 a.m. at Barnett Field and the volleyball team hit the Jenkins Fieldhouse floor at 10:15 a.m. for its first practice.

“We are excited to once again get the season going. It is an exciting time to be a Moccasin student-athlete,” FSC Director of Athletics Pete Meyer said. “I’m hoping we can continue the successes we’ve had here over the past few years.”

The men’s soccer team, led by Hugh Seyfarth, returns 13 lettermen, including five starters from last season’s 7-7-1 squad. Seyfarth’s eighth Moccasin team opens the 2012 season at home on Aug. 30 against Coker, who is ranked 18th in the preseason NSCAA Coaches’ Top 25 poll.

Meanwhile, the women’s soccer team, who is under the direction of first year coach Brittany Jones, returns 13 letterwinners, including six starters from last season’s 7-7-1 team. The women will play their first five games of the 2012 season on the road beginning on Aug. 31 at Columbus State in Columbus, Ga. CSU is ranked 22nd in the preseason NSCAA Coaches’ Top 25 poll.

Jill Stephens and the Moccasin volleyball team welcomes back four starters and seven letterwinners from last season’s 18-13 squad that advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Division II South Regional. FSC will open its 2012 season on Aug. 30 and 31 by playing four matches at the Western Oregon Classic in Monmouth, Ore. The Moccasins will open the two-day tournament against Western Washington at 12:30 p.m. EDT.
